The Leibniz-IZW is an internationally renowned German research institute. Its the goal is to understand the adaptability of wildlife in the context of global change and to enhance the survival of viable wildlife populations. In recent years, Leibniz-IZW has been working to strengthen ecological monitoring, assessment and action in order to better respond to accelerating environmental changes by using high-tech methods and approaches. The GAIA initiative is a flagship project for this new strategic focus of Leibniz-IZW as a modern wildlife research institute in the age of the Anthropocene.

The Zoo and the Tierpark Berlin are indispensable partners in the GAIA Initiative and support our mission both financially as well as with close collaboration in research and development. GAIA scientists and zoo keepers tagged white-backed vultures in the Tierpark’s aviary with commercially available transmitters and gathered important insights into animal morphology and tag design as well as valuable training data for the artificial intelligence for behaviour recognition. At the Tierpark Berlin, a prototype of the novel GAIA animal tag took its premiere flight in September 2022.
